The Best New Clothing Stores in Toronto

The Best New Clothing Stores in Toronto

We all need a little cheering up, don"t we? The economy"s in the toilet, the weather"s awful, and you can take your pick of global meltdowns (finance, the Middle East, Jennifer Aniston....).

But we can always count on style to keep us sane. Whether it"s throwing together the perfect outfit or finding the all-time best vintage frock, staying stylish is one small way to feel more together in uncertain times, and bring a little beauty to everyday life.

Kotur at the Golden Globes

Kotur at the Golden Globes

Forget scaling back and carrying boring non-descript bags just because we"re in a full blown depression. Kotur makes amazing bags at affordable prices because let"s face it, we love beautiful things no matter the economic state!

Look at these gorgeous minaudieres and python clutch embellished with jeweled flowers made of swarovski crystals ($498). More than a few actresses chose Kotur for the Golden Globes but my favorite was Isla Fisher; she is a full figured and fresh faced petite beauty with exquisite taste (I saw her at Barneys in BH and she has skin like velvet!).

I actually have the same D"abo clutch from Kotur; it is very small and won"t hold more than a lipgloss, credit card and cell but what else do you need? At Kotur.com

ON THE DESERT ROAD TO ALEXANDRIA

ON THE DESERT ROAD TO ALEXANDRIA

A leading light amongst a blossoming new wave of futuristic and creative designers, Ika's adventurous yet seductive designs flow out with a powerful “exotic radiance.” In this collection Ika has combined her love of working with other innovative individuals with a new vision of Egypt; the metamorphosis that the ancient civilization has endured leading to the present.

With her partner John Keilman and her husband Jay Bouton, Ika has taken her new collection "On the Desert Road to Alexandria" to new heights, using a unique combination of patch techniques with slashing, piping, embroidery and hand work.

Ika’s latest fashion design will be on catwalk on Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter and HKTDC World Boutique, Hong Kong. The show will be on Monday 12 January 2009 at 8 pm. Hong Kong Fashion Week for fall/Winter will held 12-15 January 2009 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter is the largest fair of its kind in Asia, and the second largest in the world. World Boutique, Hong Kong is Asia’s pioneer show promoting designer collections and brands from around the world. The two fairs will gather more than 1,600 exhibitors under one roof, to provide a wide spectrum of ready-to-wear garments, accessories and designer collections as well as lifestyle products.

The Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’ Contest 2009 will also be a highlight. In three categories - Casual & Jeans-wear, Contemporary Day-wear and Party & Evening-wear - the finalists’ designs will be staged on the first day of the fair to compete for the best collection in each category as well as the Overall Winner Award.

Holiday Shopping Madness

Holiday Shopping Madness

What was that about the recession? I made the mistake of venturing into the Eaton Centre yesterday only to be confronted by holiday shopping madness. The Apple Store was completely jammed but it was nothing compared to the line-ups at Indigo. For the privilege of buying a book at full price (they"ll be discounted next week plus they"re always 30% off online), shoppers had formed a line snaking through the store that staffers were re-assuring would only take about 15 minutes.

Seriously, this line was something like 120 people deep. I counted. To buy books. Toronto is not exactly devoid of bookstore options. I happened to go by Type on the Danforth later in the day and I was the only customer.

Sandals, finally

Sandals, finally

I ranted a few weeks ago about my really frustrating experience trying to buy sandals at the mall. I"d pretty much given up hope of finding what I wanted - attractive and wearable sandals with an ankle strap.

With only days left before my trip, I finally found the shoes I wanted. And - surprise, suprise - I did not find them at the mall. I found them at Marshalls. (Marshalls is apparently developing a Shoe Megashop - over 5,000 sq. feet of shoes - for people like me who want quality shoes without having to deal with snotty Nordstrom people.)

It can be difficult finding shoes for my feet (they"re size 10 - La Femme knows my pain), but these feel like they were made for me.

Material: Italian leather
Price: under fifty dollars

Hayden-Harnett Laura Reversible Tote

Hayden-Harnett Laura Reversible Tote

Trendy! Classic! No… Trendy! No… Classic! NO… TRENDY! NO… CLASSIC! Wait, why can’t it be both? Introducing the Hayden-Harnett Laura Reversible Tote. Distressed metallic on one side, matte leather on the other, this unstructured tote offers the best of both worlds. I think what I like most about this tote is its ability to go anywhere. Wear it to work with the matte leather side facing out. Heading off to a party in the evening? Simply turn the bag inside out and you’re ready to go. Need to change clothes before you head to the party? No problem! This baby is big enough to hold everything you need to go from day to night. Plus I adore the simplicity of this tote. The no-fuss, hidden magnetic closure makes it easy to access the contents therein. And talk about being a lightweight! Despite its large size, this tote is not going to weigh you down!

The Hayden-Harnett Laura Reversible Tote is available in Pewter/Black (shown) or Bronze/Brown and measures 18.5″ x 14.5″ x 6″. Normally $520, find it on sale for only $375 at Luna Boston.

Ugly duckling ragg socks now for fashionistas too

Ugly duckling ragg socks now for fashionistas too

I dip into fashion mags now and again--mostly, I confess, for the humor. Largely unintended, or so I hope--although sometimes I suspect the folks who write the copy are having a laugh, too.

So this example, which I think may be serious, is from T Magazine, an occasional section of the New York TImes. It"s a poem to the most down-home of cold-weather apparel: socks and other clothing made of ragg wool. Author Bruce Pask explains what ragg is, although not where the name came from, nor the fact that there"s ragg cotton too.

This must be T Magazine"s indirect acknowledgment of the world"s present financial chaos. Ragg is a fine choice. I never thought of it as a high-fashion fabric, but it"s reasonably priced, durable, and wonderfully warm. It"s thick though, so if it"s ragg socks you acquire, your shoes will need to be accommodating.

Jeweled Bra Straps and More

Jeweled Bra Straps and More
You might have a slew of parties to attend beginning this month. You want to look elegant and stylish and you don't want to worry about your underwear. What about those strapless dresses that require strapless bras? I know that at times, strapless bras don't feel especially secure (ever had one end up around your waist?), but you don't want your regular straps showing. Here's a solution to that bra strap dilemma....

Bra Straps.com is a great way to wear a bra under your party attire and feel incredibly secure while also showing off your straps instead of hiding them. Your bra straps can be jeweled with Swarovski crystals or freshwater pearls. They'll look like part of your little black dress and add some glitz and glamour to your entire ensemble.

All you have to do is attach them to any bra with detachable straps. Easy as pie. And with the variety of straps available (beaded, clear, glittery and more), you can get different looks with the same dress or top!
