The Perfect Companion for Your Sunblock

The Perfect Companion for Your Sunblock

Ah, summer. The Sand. The Sea. The beach. Nothing makes the beach more fun than white sand, swimming in the cool ocean, and getting that perfect tan. And nothing make it more painful (and even deadly!) than ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Luckily, the UV detector beads pictured above tells you how much of that skin cancer causing solar radiation is present. They start out crystal clear, then turn multi-colored as the level of UV increases. Better yet, it's a cell phone strap. You can sling it on many smartphones or PDAs, meaning this UV meter accompanies you everywhere, even away from the beach.

And thanks to the pink-toned colors and the single "Swarovski crystal" on the end, it comes as no surprise that thanks should go to Gadgenista for heads-up, a recently launched blog in the tradition of PopGadget.

Top 100 Ad Campaigns

Top 100 Ad Campaigns
Ever wondered what ads dominate the online advertising realm? Wonder no more for AdAge has collected them all for better accessibility.

At the AdAge website, an article titled top 100 advertising campaigns would surely captivate your searching psyche. What makes ads influential? What makes 'em standout? What makes 'em catchy?

AdAge article says:
In ranking the 100 greatest ad campaigns of the century, the impact of that second genesis is manifest. Whereas only seven of Advertising Age's selection of the classic 100 campaigns of the century employ celebrities, and only eight of them invoke sex, and only four of them play on consumer fear and insecurities in the way the industry is constantly decried for doing, no fewer than 16 come from the 1960s. Six hail from DDB alone.

It is, of course, a challenging and somewhat presumptuous enterprise to reduce a century's labors to a Top 100 list. It is not difficult, however, to establish criteria.
Now, how do you rate online ads?

See You in the Virtual World

See You in the Virtual World
I love traveling through virtual worlds. The first one I remember online was a haunted house that you had to find your way through. Very cool! Now you can join a virtual world where you can connect and even chat with other people in the virtual world.

They are a lot like the real world in that you can buy and sell things and meet people. You can go shopping and play dress up. Visit friends in their virtual homes and go do things together, virtually.

Some virtual worlds you can join include: IMVU, Second Life, Gaia and Cyworld.

Lovely boots in sustainable fashion

Lovely boots in sustainable fashion
Every true fashionista must take care of other's needs, and live in sync with nature as much as possible. This is why the Lime's Hillary Rosner made me feel so good - she discovered Terra Plana shoes made in sustainable footwear fashion - and oh so pretty.

Hillary says:
"Terra Plana minimizes the use of glue in its shoes, instead relying time-tested stitching techniques. They use chrome-free tanning processes, and use recycled materials whenever possible (such as rubber soles made from shoe-factory leftovers). They even have a whole line of 100% recycled sneakers."

The shoe I like the most from that range is in fact a boot. I know you must have a pair or two in your closet, but these are just irresistible. Also, thanks to it making process, these are going to last, so you might as well wear them the next fall and winter too.

Available at Terra Plana for $400

Britney Spears New Addiction: Wigs

Britney Spears New Addiction: Wigs

Yes the news is true, Pop-star Britney Spears has become addicted to buying wigs. According to sources troubled star has spent more then $60,000 on wigs, vintage hats, lingerie, perfume, jewelers and clothes in less than a month.

Expert on addiction and compulsion Dr. Robert Butterworth tells in U.S. In Touch Weekly Magazine:

People with compulsions often go from one obsessive deed to another. She’s acting like a child. This is not normal performance. Her whole deportment is strange. She’s not in her able-bodied at present.

I am sure Britney is doing all this to come out of her mourning, but is it the reason of her alarming manners? I’m sure Britney does need help again.

Celebrating Real Women

Celebrating Real Women

I really liked Nicool's post over at Room 116 about the new Nike women's advertising:

An article on AdAge.com talks about new work from Wieden + Kennedy (Portland) that "celebrates 'Big Butts, Thunder Thighs and Tomboy Knees.'" Similar to the Dove ads in targeting "real women", the article actually talks about how this campaign follows the same trend as the Dove ads but how it also goes beyond Dove and is setting itself apart. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the Dove ads are for women who are just larger, and the Nike ads are for women who are larger (or who feel something about them is different) because of the countless hours they put in playing sports and exercising?

I like the approach. I like all but the "My Butt is Big...." ad. The copy didn't get me like in the other two. I'm also not too sure about the art direction (what are those water colored designs in the background?), but I think this campaign does a good job targeting the type of "real women" they are going after.

In 1990 I bought Women's Sports and Fitness Magazine out of bankruptcy. At the time, it was very hard to convince any advertiser, including those in the sports market, to treat real women with respect by acknowledging that they are not size 2 runway models. At the time, Nike was the only company that "Got it."

It's nice to see Nike leading the way to a more honest conversation with their customers. Through such honesty, a deeper trust is being created that will make it even harder for competitor's, such as Adidas/Reebok, to capture the hearts and minds of athletic women.

Yeah, Nike!

Yeah, Nike!

I love my sneakers and always struggle to figure out a way to where them with a suit when I'm standing in front of a few hundred people giving a speech without looking lame. Nike's solved the problem with their new anaconda or crocodile skin Air Force 1. The shoes include 18-karat-gold shoelace tips. Even at $2000, these lux-sneakers will be gone in a matter of minutes.

Remembering Lily Wheelwright.

Remembering Lily Wheelwright.
After a screening of Orphans at SXSW, I stepped outside for a smoke. Lily Wheelwright came up to me and asked for cigarette. Happily obliging, I apologized for not having any Winstons on me, the brand I'd just seen her smoking on screen. She smiled and lit up and that's the full extent of our acquaintance. Nonetheless, it was a shock when the emails came in with the news of her death on March 22. She was only 24.

Now, Neil Amdur has a bit of background in the New York Times and mentions a memorial service taking place today at the Meeting House of Plymouth Church of the Pilgrims in Brooklyn and a screening of Orphans on April 30 at 10 pm at the IFC Center. I thought that, if you're in New York, you might like to know.

20 spring fashion trends

20 spring fashion trends
Getting further with our spring fashion, I must say trends this season are really giving us the variety of styles to choose from, so don't be afraid if you just don't see yourself in something. Go on and try out the next fashion trend in row, I'm sure you'll find the right thing.

Here you go with the next five spring fashion trends:

6. Shift dresses - The simple shift dresses are coming back from the sixties o make you feel cute and young again. The straight style will make you look thinner, and if you fear to show excessive amount of leg, opt in for a knee-long sleeveless shift.

7. Shorts - I know you would prefer to wear capris so much more, but like it or not, shorts are the trouser style of spring. You will be very pleased to learn that knee long shorts with matching jackets, so called short suits, are hitting stores like crazy.

8. Yellow - Along with the royal or electric blue mentioned in my first spring fashion post. yellow is going to reign streets and offices worldwide. If you're bold enough, wear it on a dress or a jacket, if not get a screamingly yellow top and pair it with white colored apparel.

9. Chunky heels - Every gal knows chunky heels make her legs seem chubby and her elegant ankles can disappear, but interesting almost architectural heels seen on runways are also so much stable and supportive.

10. Hair accessories - No longer will ponytails, simple buns or hair let down do the trick. You have to get scarves, bands, pins and slides and use it with no mercy. Another hint: do it with grace as always and forget about scrunchies.

Sarah Jessica Parker Bitten by the Fashion Bug
Ever wished you had Carrie Bradshaws fabulous clothes? Well, now you can!

Sarah Jessica Parker is launching her own fashion design label, Bitten.

The first exclusive showing took place yesterday with only the fashion elite getting a sneak peak at what SJP has whipped up.

According to Womens Wear Daily magazine, the Sex and the City stars first fashion line is quite comparable to the more adult collection put together by the Olsen twins.

The magazine stated:

Details on the collection, including price point, target audience, and manufacturer, remain tight-lipped, but many insiders are already comparing it to The Row, the fashion line developed by the Olsen twins.

The 40 year old became a household fashion icon while playing the role of Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City. Parker also won the Fashion Icon Award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards in 2004. The pint-sized powerhouse already has launched her own perfume called Lovely.
